DIY: Fix a Hollow Door Hole
If your hollow door develops a hole, you’ll need to patch it up in order to protect the integrity of the door structure. Follow these tips on patching your hollow door.
You will want to have the following on hand:
- Foam filling
- Razor blade or knife
- Vinyl putty
Begin by filling the hole with the foam filling and allowing the foam to set up and dry. You may need to let it sit overnight. Next, use your razor blade or sharp knife to cut away any excess foam that may have set up outside of the boundaries of the door. Be careful not to cut away too much of the foam. If this happens, you’ll have to set up new foam until the surface of the foam is smooth and even with the surface of the door.
Finally, use a putty knife to cover the foam surface with vinyl putty according to the putty instructions. Again, be sure to allow plenty of time for the putty to dry.
If the hole is large enough, consider replacing the entire door. This process can actually be faster and about as cheap as patching up a hole, consider that many hollow doors are quite cheaply priced.
